Duplicate Bridge
Tournament results for Oct. 16 with five tables played: first, Dick Titus and Arnie Lang; second, Mary and Jim Anderson; third, Eunice Michaelis and Warren Behrends; fourth, Jim Fisher and Bud Higgins.
Duplicate Bridge is played each Wednesday at noon at the Mower County Senior Center in Austin. All Bridge players are welcome. Call Dave Ring at 507-434-4189 for partnership assistance or additional information.
National Active and Retired Federal Employees
National Active and Retired Federal Employees Chapter 469 met Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at the Pizza Ranch in Austin.
Julie Schramek, executive assistant/corporate communications manager of the cooperative Response Center, was our speaker. President Diane Damerow and First Vice President Daphne Wagner are installed. Past President Jonathon Green was presented with a certificate of outstanding service for his 19 years of dedication to Chapter 469. A list of various NARFE committees was passed out. Members volunteered to stay informed on the subjects covered by these committees and share that information with the chapter. A motion was made and passed to cancel the scheduled meeting in December. Our next meeting will be Feb. 11, 2014, at the Pizza Ranch in Albert Lea.
American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 91
The Austin American Legion Auxiliary Unit 91 met on Oct. 9 with 10 members and a guest attending.
Plans were made to:
—Help fund the Legion’s Halloween.
—Meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 28 at the club to prepare the letters to be sent to all members regarding Poppy Day, which will be Nov. 8.
—Attend the Legion birthday party honoring Harold Gomer’s 90th birthday at the Legion.
—Membership fees are coming in good and are now due. The meeting was closed in prayer. The next meeting to be Nov. 13.
The Austin Eagles Auxiliary hosted Auxiliary State President Gayle Batchelder and State Mother Becky Rychart of Grand Rapids as they celebrated their 78th anniversary.
Thirty-seven past presidents of the auxiliary are deceased, and of the 20 living past presidents, 10 were in attendance —Ordella Rolfson, 1966; Arlene Pike, 1967; Gloria Njos, 1970; Ethel Huinker, 1971-1972; Sandra Askland, 1974; Elaine Lane, 1987 and 2013; Millie King, 2004; Hazel Julson, 2005; Carol Eveslage, 2009; and Joan Barth, 20010-2011.
A chicken dinner was served by the Eagles Club. Entertainment was provided by Barb Sprandel singing this year’s theme song, Pontoon.
Past Grand Auxiliary president Gwen Stalkamp of Albert Lea, special visitor, participated in the festivities.
Susan Hayes and Debra Soderberg lit the anniversary candle for deceased past president and their grandmother Vera Meyer.
