Best Bets: All things American this and next week

Published 10:20 am Friday, November 8, 2013

Plenty of the things we have come to enjoy are easily available for us in Austin this weekend. We can laugh, jam out, or be glued to the drama on stage. We can sit in the woods and wait for those trophy bucks. Whatever you choose, though, take time this Monday to remember and honor those who help make those things possible.

1. Garden? What garden?

7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-10, Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, Austin.

The secret garden — yes, that one. Matchbox Children’s Theatre brings the classic tale “The Secret Garden” to the Paramount Theatre Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for ages 14 and younger.

2. Rock with a positive message

7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, Cornerstone Church, 1403 First Ave. SW, Austin.

Don’t sleep on Seventh Day Slumber at Cornerstone Church this Friday. The Christian rock group, along with the band Havenstance, will bring its positive message for anybody who wants to jam out at the church. Tickets and information are available by calling 507-438-6082 or 507-440-4670.

3. Oh, deer

Sunrise, Saturday, Nov. 9, throughout Minnesota.

Shh! All will be quiet in the woods Saturday morning, until that first glimmer of light. Then it’s on. The firearms deer season opens at sunrise Saturday. Be sure to get your permits and check DNR regulations for your permit areas, available at www.dnr.state.mn.us.

4. Funny thing is:

8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, Eagles Club, 107 11th St. NE, Austin.

The funny thing is … well, at the Eagles Club this Saturday. Three comedians will take the stage at 8 p.m., including Rose Creek native Josh Fargusson, feature Rick Logan and headliner Lee L.A. Lycan. Tickets, $17 at the door, are also available in advance ($15). Military personnel who show ID get in for $10. Admission includes hors d’oeuvres.

5. We salute you, veterans

All day Monday, Nov. 11, citywide, Austin.

Area veterans, as every year, will teach youngsters what it means to be veterans and patriots during breakfasts at all Austin Public Schools. Then, at 11 a.m., a veteran who carried the flag home, along with others will hold a flag-raising ceremony at the Hormel Corporate Offices. A POW/MIA program will be held at the VFW at 3:15 p.m., just before the flag retirement ceremony.
