The Austin boys hockey team received a boost from two of its younger players as it picked up its first win of the season in a 3-2 victory over Winona (0-6-1 overall, 0-5 Big NIne) in Riverside Arena Thursday.

The Packers (1-5-1 overall, 1-3 Big Nine) trailed 2-0 going into the third period when sophomore Jason Stoulil tied the game up at 2-2 with a power play goal and freshman Jace Greenman scored the game-winner on a power play with eight minutes left in the game.

“A lot of our younger guys are stepping up,” Austin head coach Erik LaRock said. “Jace is right up there and Jason Stoulil and Nate Conner and playing well too.”

Austin sophomore Connor Poczos picked up his first win in net as he stopped 37 shots. He made some big saves in the last 2:24 as the Packers killed off a Winona power play.

“Connor saved us,” LaRock said. “He had some really nice saves and he stayed square the puck.”

Austin got on the board when Blake Halsey scored on assists from Dan Larson and Adam Maxfield.

The Packers, who trailed 2-0 after one period, had to pick up their game from a slow start to get the win.

“We were happy with the response,” LaRock said. “We played terrible in the first period, in the second period we played better and in the third period we played how we can play.”
