Gary Lynn Corkill, 73, of Austin, Minn., died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home. He was born June 23, 1940, in Austin, Minn., to Lynn and Charlotte (Kriz) Corkill. After his graduation from Austin High School in 1958, Gary married Janith Moehlman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin on Nov. 1, 1958. He attended the Austin Area Vocational-Technical Institute for parts training, and then worked at Interstate Motor Trucks in Albert Lea as parts manager for 10 years. In 1980, he moved to Eau Claire, Wis., where he owned and operated the Champion Auto Parts store for 2½ years. Gary then was employed by Ziegler Caterpillar in Eau Claire before retiring due to his health. In 2003, they moved back to Austin. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and time spent at the family cabin in northern Minnesota. He was an avid collector of railroad memorabilia. Gary co-founded the Chippewa Valley Motor Car Association, where they operated their motor cars on leased railroad tracks in Durand, Wis.
Survivors include his wife, Janith Corkill, of Austin; his son, Bradley (Pamela) Corkill, of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Amy (Ryan) Tostenson, Nathan Anibas, Riley Daniels, Nicholas Corkill, Cassie Scheller, Sean Corkill and Reid Corkill; great-grandchildren Ethan Daniels, Elizabeth Tostenson, Myles Tostenson; brothers, Terry (Julie) Corkill, Steven (Jane) Corkill, and Mark (Kim) Corkill, all of Austin; sisters, Colleen (Homer) Williams, of St. Paul; Karen (Harvey) Cotton, of Rochester, Minn.; Jeanne (Rick) Sladky, of Lombard, Ill.; and Cheryl (Michael) Ouellette, of Rochester; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lynn Corkill and Charlotte Lien; his son, Brian Corkill, on Dec. 23, 2011; and his daughter, Susan Daniels, on July 21, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Rev. William Natzke officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.
