The second of two men accused of assaulting another man with a baseball bat in November has pleaded not guilty to his charge.

Abraham Rodriguez, 24, of Austin, entered the plea Friday in Freeborn County District Court. He invoked his Sixth Amendment right to a jury trial.

The plea follows that of co-defendant Joel Rodriguez, 21, of Austin, earlier this month.

Court documents state the men allegedly struck a 27-year-old Albert Lea man in the head with a bat on Nov. 9 outside of 1010 Abbott St. The alleged victim was airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester for blunt force trauma to the head.

Police initially responded to the address after receiving a report of vehicles attempting to run over people. Officers discovered there was a possible stabbing and received a description of a vehicle that had left the scene, according to court documents.

A short distance away, police found the vehicle matching the description and stopped it. Baseball bats were inside the vehicle, reports stated.

Abraham Rodriguez faces a charge of second-degree felony assault, while Joel Rodriguez was charged with second-degree assault and aiding and abetting second-degree assault.

Abraham Rodriguez remains in jail on a $200,000 conditional bail, while Joel Rodriguez is being held on a $50,000 conditional bail.
