Terrance “Terry” G. Bates, 73, of Austin, Minn., died at his home on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013.

Terrance Guy Bates was born Feb. 7, 1940, at Grand Meadow, Minn., the son of Roy and Vera (Smith) Bates. Terry attended Austin High School and served in the U.S. Army. He worked in the construction industry and was married to Mary Bell in 1964, they later divorced.  On Nov. 15, 1985, he was married to Bettie Elam Bayer.

Terry was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, summer camping trips to French Lake and swimming. He liked to travel and go for drives. He was well known for his joke telling and enjoyed visiting with the neighbors.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents Vera and Roy Bates, a sister Angie and brothers Joe, Clarence and Ray. He is survived by his wife, Bettie Bates, of Austin;

son, Trent Bates, of Albert Lea, Minn.; daughter, Tonia Boyd, of Austin; granddaughter, Samantha Lebarron; step daughters, Melanie Miland, of Austin; Kathleen  Grimley, of Austin; Denise Thompson, of Austin; Step-grandchildren, Taylor Miland, Allie Miland, Ashley Thompson, Lauren Thompson, Justin Matthews, Logan Grimley, Michael Grimley and Kellie Drenth; one step great-grandson, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3rd at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Jeffrey Forbes officiating. There will be military rites by Austin Post 91 American Legion. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Tuesday morning for one hour before the service.
