Austin’s Thomas Herrera is looking to raise money for a good cause as he prepares for the fight of his life.
Herrera will fight in the Driller Mixed Marital ARts middleweight amateur title fight at the Holiday Inn Conference Center Feb. 1 and he’s selling t-shirts leading up to that fight. The t-shirts cost $25 and 20 percent of that will go to the Rochester Children’s Hospital.
Herrera is selling the shirts through Korean Fightwear, a clothing company in the Twin Cities, and the t-shirts feature Herrera with an Incredible Hulk theme. When Herrera learned that he could help raise money for a charity, he was quick to jump on board.
“I like to give back and I always like to contribute whatever I can,” Herrera said. “The number one New Year’s resolution I always have is to give back and to help as many people as I possibly can.”
Herrera is has already sold 75 shirts and raised $1,000 for the Rochester Children’s Hospital. He’s hoping to raise at least $1,000 more for the hospital before his fight on Feb. 1.
On Feb. 1, Herrera will be taking on Thomas Krenzel, who if from the twin cities. Krenzel is 6-6 overall and Herrera has an official record of 7-2.
Herrera has been fighting for three years and this will be his most important fight to date.
“It’s basically the all-Minnesota title. After this fight, doors will open for my career in Mixed Martial Arts,” Herrera said. “This is a very important fight and a very big step in my career.”
Herrera has put himself on a steady training regimen to prepare for the title fight. He spends his mornings working out at the YMCA, his afternoons training at Anytime Fitness and his evenings at IMPACT Fitness.
“I’m constantly working to get bigger, faster, stronger and more technical,” Herrera said. “It’s like a full time job. Cardio is the number one thing. If you can out-last your opponent you can do a whole lot better.”
