Sumner expanding year-round schedule to serve the entire district

The year-round schedule at Sumner Elementary is getting more attention.
District officials have decided to expand Sumner’s schedule, also known as 45/15, to the entire district, meaning students in the Austin area will be able to get bus rides to Sumner starting in the next academic year. Students attend school for 45 days and have 15 day breaks, along with a seven-week summer break.
Officials aren’t entirely sure what reaction will be to the decision, such as how many families will inquire, how many new students will attend and how busing routes will change.
“It’s all about logistics,” said Educational Services Director John Alberts. “And it depends on where the students are that may elect to attend.”
To prevent a potential flood on enrollment, however, the district may copy a Rochester school’s approach. There will be a lottery to select new students. Currently, there are 205 students at Sumner.
Three meetings will be held in the Sumner Elementary School library to inform parents about this educational option: 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28, 9 a.m. Feb. 4 and noon on Feb. 6. For more information, call 507-460-1100 or email Principal Sheila Berger at sheila.berger@austin.k12.mn.us.
