A house erupted in flames Wednesday night in Racine, not long after firefighters had already responded once and cleared the scene.

The home at 197 Harrison Ave. S may be a total loss, according to Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi; however, the family and pets are safe. The Red Cross is assisting with arrangements for the family.

The Stewartville Fire Department responded to the fire at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday. According to the Sheriff’s report, a lamp that tipped over may have started the fire. Firefighters remained on scene for about two hours, and city workers were trying to shut off the water main to the house. However, after firefighters left, city workers called the fire department back to the home as the upstairs portion erupted in flames.

An upper window was blown out, and there were charred holes in the siding after firefighters cleared the scene a second time. The state fire marshal may investigate the cause of the fire.
