The Blooming Prairie girls basketball team is set to play in its biggest game since 2005 when it will take on No. 1 seeded Goodhue in the Section 1A West title game in Mayo Civic Auditorium in Rochester Saturday at 2 p.m.
The No. 3 seeded Awesome Blossoms (19-7 overall) upset No. 5 ranked Lyle-Pacelli to get to the title game, and BP head coach John Worke hopes BP has another solid effort in it as they prepare for top-ranked Goodhue (23-5 overall).
“The girls really enjoyed the last few days,” BP head coach John Worke said. “I told them if they think the last one was a great, it will be double that if we win this one.”
The Wildcats beat beat BP 73-47 Jan. 30. Goodhue handled Southland 74-39 in the Section 1A West semifinals and it is outscoring its opponents 65.1 to 44.4 points per game.
“It’s tournament time now so things are a little different,” Worke said. “They’re a good team and they’ve had a solid schedule. They’re very disciplined. They can rally around a superstar, but at the same time they have great supplemental players.”
Goodhue leans on the scoring and play-making of senior guard Mikayla Miller, but the team can also spread the floor with shooters. Worke said the Blossoms will have to be aware and aggressive on defense.
“You can’t let [Miller] go off and score 30 points, but they can also hit you from angles and that’s why they’re good,” Worke said.
Goodhue likes to pressure the ball on defense and it thrives off of turnovers and break-away hoops. BP will have to handle the ball like it did against LP if it wants to stay in the game.
“They throw a lot of different defenses at you. They create a lot of havoc up front and they play good team defense,” Worke said. “We’ll have to be deliberate and not hurry. They feed off turnovers and pushing the ball down the floor. They’re similar to Lyle-Pacelli in a lot of ways, but they can slow it down too.”
BP’s biggest advantage lies in its size as twin towers Taylor Hagen and Kalyn Naatz both like to play around the hoop. The duo could give the Blossoms some second chances on offense.
“We want to utilize our bigs. We need to get them touches,” Worke said.
If BP wins on Saturday, it will play the winner of Rushford-Peterson and Fillmore Central with a trip to the Class ‘A’ state tournament on the line March 13 at 6 p.m. in Mayo Civic Arena.
