For Jiyoon Shin, the third time’s charm.
In her third year auditioning, the Austin High School senior won the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition and will be featured in the orchestra’s final concert of its 57th season at 2 p.m. Sunday in Austin High School’s Knowlton Auditorium.
Shin will perform a solo on the second movement of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Concerto for Violin.”
“I’m really excited for my solo,” Shin said. “I think it’s really a great opportunity that our community has for young artists to be able to perform a symphony. It’s really amazing.”
While Shin noted the concerto is a frequently performed piece, she says the first movement is played more often, and the slower second movement is frequently overlooked.
“It’s like a hidden gem,” Shin said.
Shin has played violin since fifth grade and joined ASO as a freshman. She studies privately with Sue Radloff, who is also the orchestra’s concert master.
Radloff praised Shin as a talented, humble musician.
“She has a very mature way of phrasing music, but she’s also technically very advanced, too,” Radloff said.
ASO will perform works by three Romantic composers: Mendelssohn, Richard Wagner, and Cesar Franck.
To Radloff, ASO’s concert will feature a variety of music. She described Wagner’s “Rienzi Overture” as fast and adventurous with loud brass, while Fanck’s “Symphony in D Minor” is dark and brooding but also has exhilarating moments as it spans the realm of human emotions.
“We’re playing some real exciting, difficult music,” Radloff said.
Shin was one of four area musicians to audition in January for ASO’s Young Artist Competition, and she said it was difficult competition. She’s glad to be closing her orchestra tenure on a high note.
“I’m really privileged to do this my senior year — my last hurrah with the orchestra,” she said.
Shin is the daughter of Joong-Han Shin and Kay Shin. She has two siblings, Katie and Yoon-Sang.
Besides music, she has participated in cross-country, National Honor Society, and student council.
Shin also plays piano in Jazz Band and sings in the Choralaires, vocal jazz and concert choir. She currently is a member of the Austin High School Symphony Orchestra, the La Fiera Chamber Ensemble, and La Bella Vita String Quartet. She enjoys Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Frédéric Chopin. Shin also plays piano.
She plans to study neuroscience in college, likely at Emory University in Atlanta.
Shin is a three-year member of MMEA All-State Orchestra, spent two years in the Big Nine Select Orchestra, and has received superior ratings at the state solo and small ensemble contests. She was also first chair at the Luther College Dorian String Festival.
In advance, tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for college students. Tickets at the doors at $15 for adults and $12 for college students. Students in kindergarten though 12th grade can attend for free, but ASO officials ask that students younger than fifth grade be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available at Hy-Vee and the Coffee House on Main. Visit www.austinmnsymphony.org for more information.
ASO fans won’t have to wait until fall to hear the group again, as the group is set to play during Freedom Fest in July.
