Best Bets: Ball kicks off busy weekend in Austin

The social season in Mower County is under way. There’s far too many things to see this weekend, but if you’re ready to get out and enjoy what Austin has to offer, here’s a few highlights for the next few days.
1. Dressing up
7 p.m. Friday, April 25. Black and White Ball. Holiday Inn Ballroom. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
IBI Data is putting on the fifth annual Black and White Ball tonight, so expect a lot of people in gorgeous outfits. The event is a fundraiser for the Mower County Relay for Life, so come for a good cause.
2. A trip to the 80’s
7 p.m.- 10 p.m. Friday, April 25. Hairball Concert. 1910 Mexican Kitchen ‘n’ Pub — Old Terp Ballroom.
Hairball presents its show this Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Capacity is limited to 1,200, and tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show. Age requirements are 18 and over. Special guests include AcillateM, a tribute to Metallica.
3. Watch and learn
7 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Austin Human Rights Film Festival. Paramount Theatre, free to the public.
The Austin Human Rights Commission is presenting several movies as part of its annual film festival. “abUSed,” a documentary about immigration rights, will play Friday night, followed by “The Adventures of Milo and Otis” Saturday afternoon and “Boys Don’t Cry” on Saturday night.
4. Buried in bunnies
Saturday, April 26. Cedar River Rabbit Show. Crane Pavilion, Mower County Fairgrounds.
The Cedar River Rabbit Club will hold it’s 21st annual show Saturday. There will be about 200 participants and about 1,250 different breeds of rabbits. Judging begins at 8:30 a.m. For more information, please contact Don VanHyfte at (507) 433-3018.
5. Community pride
9 a.m. to noon. Saturday, April 26. Eighth Annual Community Pride Day. Main Street Plaza, Austin
The community of Austin invites volunteers to show their community pride by helping clean up debris in parks, trail areas, and public places after winter. There will be coffee, water, hot cocoa and donuts. For more information, go to www.ci.austinmn.us, or to volunteer call (507) 433-1881.
6. Stepping it up
10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Stepping Out for Autism walk. Bandshell Community Park.
The annual fundraiser to support autism will take place Saturday. Lunch is at 11 a.m. and entertainment by Koo Koo Kanga Roo is at 11:30 a.m. For more information, call 507-433-4243 or go to www.hormelhistorichome.org.
7. Dining with diversity
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Fifth Annual Taste of Nations. Oak Park Mall
Celebrate different cultures at this family-friendly free event on Saturday. There will be different types of food to taste, as well as games, entertainment and music. For more information call (507) 434-2863.
8. Catch the concert
3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27. The Riverland Connection and the Ecumenical Bells. Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1600 W Oakland Ave
The Riverland Alumni Ensemble will be performing Sunday in concert with the Ecumenical Bells. This is part of the “Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Concert” series. For more information, call (507) 433-0547.
