YMCA holding adult, kids races

An opportunity to be active and raise funds for your community? It doesn’t get much better than that.
The YMCA will hold a 5 and 10K race on May 3. All funds raised will be allocated to the Y’s financial assistance programs, giving youth and families access to important Y programs. Everyone in our community deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
Date: Saturday, May 3
Start time: 9 a.m. at the YMCA parking lot on Main Street or close by due to road construction.
Finish: Close to YMCA because of road construction.
Cost: $20 for the 5K before April 16 and $25 after. $30 for the 10K before April 16 and $35 after. Cost includes a t-shirt. T-shirts are only guaranteed to those who register by April 16. Children under 5 may participate but do not need to register.
Registration: Online at www.ymca-austin.org or by filling out this race brochure and turning it into the YMCA front desk.
Runners that are preregistered should pick up their packets at the front desk by 8:30 a.m. on race day.
Race day registratoin: Registration will be open from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the front desk at the YMCA. Thre is no registration after 8:30 a.m.

YMCA of Austin introducing the sport of triathlon to kids
What: Y Kids Triathlon.
Who: Kids ages 4 to 14-years-old. Youth may wear life jackets, have training wheels/helmet and parents may accompany them on the course. This event is open to the public. Youth do not need to be Y members.
When: 8 .m. Saturday, May 31 start.
Where: YMCA of Austin, 704 1st Drive NW. www.ymca-austin.org.
The swim portion will take place in the Y pool while the bike and run portions will be outdoors.
Cost: $15 for first child, $10 for each additional child. All participants will receive a T-shirt and participation medal.
Why: The first modern swim/bike/run event to be called a triathlon was held in San Diego, Calif. in 1972 and drew 42 competitors. Today there are more than 1.5 million people participating in triathlon events annually. The YMCA of Austin is excited to introduce the sport of triathlon to a new generation of youth and help put the fun back in swimming, running and biking.
The skills they develop by participating in triathlons promote physical activity and provide them with fitness tools that will carry over into adulthood.
