BLOOMING PRAIRIE — The Awesome Blossoms will be well represented at the Class A state golf meet in Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, Minn. June 10 and June 11, but their golfers will have different goals on their minds.
BP senior Victor Peterson is looking to play even better than when he took 27th place in the state meet as a sophomore and freshmen Tommy Braaten and Taylor Christianson are looking to soak up some quality experience.
“[Victor’s] chances are good. He just needs to keep his head in it and play the kind of golf we know he can play,” BP head coach Erik Viigeland said. “It’ll be a good experience for [Tommy and Taylor] to see how the big tournaments are run and some of the pressure that comes along with it. Hopefully they can just have some fun and take it all in.”
Peterson shot an 80 and took second place at the Section 1A meet, but he said he may have gotten a little to passive on the back nine of that meet. He’s hoping to bring it all together at state.
“Last time I made it to state, one day I putted real well and hit the ball horrible,” Peterson said. “The next day I hit the ball real good and putted horrible. I think I’ve gotten more consistent over the last couple of years and I have way more shots in my bag that I can pull out if I need to.”
Peterson, who will play golf at North Iowa Area Community College next season, said the state meet is just the start of his busy summer schedule. He plans on playing in plenty of big meets over the next few months.
“State is a great way to kick off the summer,” Peterson said. “I’m a little excited to move on to the summer tourneys and get going on those.”
Peterson has seen his younger teammate Braaten grow this season and he thinks that Braaten has even more room to improve in his golf career.
“Tommy’s made it a long ways,” Peterson said. “He has a couple of more levels he can move up. He’s only 97 pounds and once he gains a little muscle, he’ll start posting some better scores. He has the swing and he has the game, he just doesn’t have the size to utilize it all yet.”
Braaten shot an 83 at the Section 1A meet and he had to win a playoff to get to state. Braaten didn’t want to play in a playoff, but he responded well to it.
“The only really pressure I felt was on my first tee shot and my first putt. After that I tried to tune out the audience,” Braaten said. “At the beginning of the season it was my goal to make it to state and all of the hard work I put in paid off.”
Braaten saw Peterson play at the state meet two years ago, but that’s been his only state experience. He’s looking to take it easy and play as well as he can at state this year.
“I’m more excited than nervous,” Braaten said. “I’m not really going out there trying to win this thing. I’m just trying to get experience.”
Christianson wanted to make it to state all year and she was so nervous at the Section 1A meet that she couldn’t even look at the leader board. She ended up shooting a 93 to take the last state qualifying spot.
Christianson is hoping to play her best golf at the state meet.
“I’m guessing it’ll be nerve racking, but I’m hoping to do well,” she said. “I had to put in a lot of work and I played in a lot of meets. I’ve worked my butt off to do well in those meets.”
