Doede Bernard Harms, 93, of Blooming Prairie, Minn., died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Prairie Manor Care Center, Blooming Prairie.

Doede was born April 8, 1921, in Franklin County, Iowa, the son of Elmer Larsen and Bernice Harms Larsen.

He moved to Minnesota where he was raised by his grandparents. Doede attended elementary school at the Maple Island Grade School and the Albert Lea High School. He was married to Eleanor Almira Karsjens on April 12, 1941, at the Baptist Church in Austin by Pastor Leo Sandgren, and the couple recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.

Doede was a vegetable farmer and became a construction supervisor with Lysne Construction Company where he worked for 32 years. In his younger years he enjoyed fast pitch softball and trapping. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and liked camping, gardening and building things. Doede and Eleanor enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Arizona. Family was always most important to him.

Doede was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Eleanor Harms, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; children, Dean (Beverly) Harms, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Juanita (Dennis)) Ingvaldson, Grand Rapids, Minn., Darla (Kenneth) Hjelmen, Gulf Shores, Ala., Daniel (Barbara) Harms, Deer Rivers, Minn.; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sister, Bonnie (Andy) Bowles, De Soto, Iowa; brother, Bill (Carolyn) Lockett, Goldfield, Iowa; sister, Violet (Gary) Pohlman, Eagle Grove, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at the Grace Baptist Church, East Campus, 100 4th Avenue SE, Austin, with Pastor Brett Williams officiating. Interment will be in the Blooming Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday for one hour before the service. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
