Fundraiser to help build home for family

I remember the excitement I felt when I received a letter this past summer, inviting me to apply for National Honor Society (NHS). I felt so much pride for something that I wasn’t even accepted into yet. Just the thought of being considered felt like a great honor.
Now, as a member of National Honor Society, I couldn’t be more proud of the work we have done this year as a group. From trick-or-treating for cans on Halloween to our annual school ‘Hunger Games’, we have achieved a lot during the last year.
As we close in on the end of the school year, we have one more fundraiser to look forward to. On Friday, May 9, we will collect money on the south side of AHS in the parking lot near Hastings gym from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The money raised will be donated to the Freeborn-Mower Habitat for Humanity and will support the Home Build Program. With the help of volunteers, a new house will be built this summer for a family who is currently stuck in an apartment that is too small. Once the house is built, it will be sold to the family on a 30-year, zero interest mortgage.
Habitat for Humanity also helps with other projects as well. It runs a ReStore, which sells used and new building materials, furniture, etc, as well as A Brush with Kindness program. This program helps low income families fix the exterior of their homes.
NHS is a leadership organization at AHS dedicated to serving our community. Juniors and Seniors with a minimum 3.6 unweighted GPA are welcomed to apply and are then selected by the NHS Faculty Council. Our 42 members are required to volunteer a minimum of 20 hours each over the course of the year.
We encourage everyone to stop by the AHS south parking lot from 6 to 8:30 p.m. this Friday night and help us end our year with one last fundraiser for a great local cause. Habitat for Humanity, building homes, hopes and dreams.
