A longtime radio and television worker is looking to take on a new medium: the Austin City Council.
David Hagen filed Tuesday to run for the 2nd Ward seat on the Austin City Council, currently the seat of Roger Boughton, who is not seeking re-election.
“I feel this is something that I am very capable of doing,” Hagen said.
Hagen was born and raised in Austin, and he has four decades of community service behind him, he said.
Hagen worked at KAUS Radio for about 16 years and as regional sales manager at KTTC Television for about 17 years. He currently works at KSMQ Public Television in underwriting and development.
Hagen has been involved in many local groups, including the original committee of Cedar River Days, now known as Freedom Fest, the Austin Jaycees Way and Means Committee, the Austin Chamber of Commerce, Austin Community College — now Riverland — and the Mower County Habitat and Pheasants Forever.
He is currently involved with the Friends of the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, the American Legion, the Izaak Walton League, the Austin Area Commission for the Arts and KSMQ.
He is also currently working with the Vision 2020 Recreation Center Committee and the Austin Artworks Marketing Committee.
Hagen is excited to see what’s coming in the future with many Vision 2020 and other local projects, especially the utility building project, Austin Artworks, looking into plans for Oak Park Mall, and Vision 2020’s plans to build a new visitor’s center.
“I’d like to make Austin a destination,” Hagen said.
One way he sees this happening is through the nature center, which has plans for additions in the near future.
Hagen said he brings many skills to the table, including 40 years of promoting and marketing, networking skills, and he said he’s well known around the Austin community.
“I know the community well,” Hagen said. “Austin has a pretty big future ahead of us.”
Outside of work, Hagen enjoys pheasant hunting, fishing and taking groups to Canada for fishing. He has also taken care of his aunt for about 19 years, after her husband passed away, and thinks elderly care is important.
