The Packer baseball team played even with Mankato West for most of the day, but a rough fourth inning cost Austin in a 10-4 loss to the Scarlets at Dick Seltz Field Wednesday.
West (8-3 overall, 7-3 Big Nine) eight of its 12 hits in the top of the fourth as it scored eight runs in the frame to take a 10-3 lead.
The Packers (2-8 overall, 2-8 Big Nine) had led 3-2 after three innings, but Austin could’ve had a bigger lead. The Packers had the bases loaded with one out in the first inning and they were only able to plate one run in the frame.
“I’m not disappointed about the way we played, besides that one inning,” Austin head coach Chris Gogolewski said. “The teams that stay focused have that one big inning and we’re looking for someone to step up and start that big inning for us. We’ve been plagued with leaving runners on.”
Due to a heavy schedule this week, the Packers had to throw four pitchers Wednesday. Dylan Gasner threw two scoreless innings and Hunter Lewis pitched a scoreless inning.
“We’re looking for guys that can eat up innings and Dylan kind of etched his name in that he can pitch for us and Hunter did a great job,” Goglewski said.
