Daughters of the American Revolution
The Red Cedar Chapter, NSDAR, met at The Cedars on May 1, which was also the National Day of Prayer, an annual observance inviting people of all faiths to pray for our nation. The hostesses were Sharon Brown, Sybil Pickett and Monica Lonergan.
Cathy Ehley, Director of Memory Care, Recreation and Wellness at The Cedars presented the program. The Cedars takes pride in their recreation/wellness program which they provide to seniors in the independent living, assisted living and memory care neighborhoods. These programs are provided seven days a week, with many volunteers helping along the way in providing a well rounded leisure program. Emotional, cognitive, spiritual, social, physical, creative arts, community outings and special needs are some of the leisure activities.
“We take pride in what we do; we love what we do and nothing else matters when you work from the heart,” Ehley said.
Lisa Nelson, Sales and Marketing Director, gave each member a gift bag which included recipes from Chef Jack Erwin.
The President General’s message was read by Judy Brown and the National Defense report was read by Marilyn Prenosil. Handouts included information about the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon, and women’s issues. Each member was given a copy of the Red Cedar’s By-Laws.
Two boxes of personal items for Operation Minnesota Nice were packed and prepared for mailing. Both boxes received a copy of the newspaper “To Our Soldiers – From the Folks at Home.” This newspaper included notes and letters from all over the USA, both children and adults, thanking the soldiers for fighting for our nation. The following includes portions of some of the letters:
“The church prayed for you on Sunday and it was powerful, people cried; be strong and resolute; my grandpa was in the Navy; God bless you, you are an awesome soldier; thank you for being an example of loyalty, of honor and of integrity for your children back home.”
A special memorial service, led by Chaplain Judy Brown, was held after the meeting in memory of three members who have passed recently: Gladys Burr, Oct. 6, 2013; Muriel Schwartz, Dec. 25, 2013; and Marjorie Anderson, March 3, 2014.
Judy read portions of each obituary and a white rose was placed in a silver vase after each reading. At the conclusion the Lord’s Prayer was recited by all. Blessed be the memory of these three special women who loved their family and friends, and loved their country. The roses were then presented to Monica Lonergan, who has been a member since 1983, and has served the Red Cedar as Regent, Secretary and Chaplain.
