The Diocese of Winona has filed a restraining order against a Montana man preventing him from going near Austin Catholic churches and schools after he made threatening YouTube videos.
Matthew Janes had stayed at a Catholic hermitage in Austin in return for work done around Diocese-owned property until Diocese officials discovered the videos on Janes’s YouTube page. Janes had threatened to harm students and staff at a school in one video.
Joel Hennessy, the Diocese’s director of communications, said Janes hadn’t made specific threats against Austin churches or schools, but the videos were enough to prompt Diocese officials to take preventive safety measures.
“We felt the treats were dangerous enough, and the judge agreed by signing the restraining order,” Hennessy said.
The restraining order, filed last week, prevents Janes from getting closer than 1,000 feet to any Diocese property. Hennessy said Janes was detained by Mower County Sheriff’s deputies last Friday and taken to a shelter in Minneapolis.
