The Austin Public Schools Board voted to clarify what type of shorts and sleeveless shirts are allowed in the dress code at I.J. Holton Intermediate School.
Where last year students were not allowed to wear sleeveless shirts of any kind, the handbook now restricts what kind of sleeveless shirts they may wear. They can no longer wear halter tops or backless shirts or dresses, and can no longer have spaghetti strap tank tops, but educators found that many sleeveless shirts were appropriate, which induced the change. The handbook also required shorts to land below students’ fingertips, but this proved implausible, because many students’ were unable to find shorts due to their body type. The handbook now states that students’ shorts must be an appropriate length and not revealing.
