City to discuss chicken ordinance

The Austin City Council will discuss a potential urban chicken ordinance at its upcoming work session Monday.
Council members have been approached by several residents over the years over whether the city would allow residents to raise chickens within city limits. A local woman, Brittany Perry, has taken up the cause in recent months as a sustainable living initiative, which prompted Council Member Judy Enright to suggest the council look into the issue last month.
The council could become split on the issue, as Council Member Steve King has publicly opposed a chicken ordinance. Mayor Tom Stiehm has also expressed concern over raising chickens in the city.
Work begins with a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday inside City Council Chambers, followed by a work session, which is when council members will discuss the potential ordinance.
