Eleanor Helen McAllister, 91, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.
Eleanor was born April 28, 1923, in New Hampton, Iowa. She was the youngest of 10 children born to Joseph and Lena (Weber) Hackman. When she was young, the family moved to Winona, Minn., where she completed her education and met husband, Russell McAllister. In 1941, they were united in marriage at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Russell was employed at the Hormel Company and Eleanor became a homemaker. Together they built their own home in Austin.
Eleanor was a devout catholic and member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting, making beautiful table cloths, and afghans. She was a wonderful pie maker— her banana cream was a family favorite. Eleanor and Russell enjoyed traveling and visited almost all of the states and Canada. She also enjoyed searching for antiques and collected beautiful dishes and glassware.
Survivors include her four children, Ron (Nancy) McAllister, Austin, Gary McAllister, Rochester, Jan (John Paul) Jones, Rochester, Debra (Robert) Embrickson, Austin; seven grandchildren, Tammy McAllister, Kerry (Joe) Novotny, Casey (Dawn) Jones, Joe (Greta) Jones, Mark (Marisol) McAllister, Mike (Addie) Embrickson, Daniel (Kim) Embrickson; five great-grandchildren, Joey, Katherine, Cailin, Shea, Tyler; sister-in-law, Geri Hackman, Rochester.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Russell McAllister; brothers, Clifford, Clement, Victor, Roy, Vincent; sisters, Adeline, Marge, Bernice, Beatrice.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating, and a rosary service at 9:45 a.m. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Eleanor gave many people comfort with a warm smile and by holding their hand. In her memory, share a smile and hold someone’s hand.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the wonderful staff at Sacred Heart for the loving care and kindness showed to Eleanor during her years there. She was blessed to have you in her life.
