Our Opinion: Use caution and avoid flood waters

While the recent flooding hasn’t reached the high water marks of 2004, it’s a good time for people to remember to always be cautious around floodwaters.
Let’s face it: Certain parts of Austin flood easily and often, especially around Driesner Park, but each year we hear of reports of people trying to drive through flooded streets.
For drivers, it’s far wiser to embrace the inconvenience of taking a longer route than risking the danger and potential costs of driving through flood waters.
We’ve also seen pictures on Facebook of children standing knee-deep in flood waters. Then yesterday, there was a report of children playing in the flood water by the Roosevelt Bridge, which spans the Cedar River on Fourth Street Southeast between Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue.
The National Weather Service issues flood warnings for a reason, and it’s never a good idea to play in flood waters. The weather service is still warning of the chance for flash floods this week, as more rain is possible later today and tomorrow.
As the chance for further flooding continues, please use caution and avoid flood waters.
