Senior center to celebrate freedom with special meal

Published 5:11 pm Saturday, June 28, 2014

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. The Constitution provides the legal and governmental framework for the U.S., however, the declaration, with its eloquent assertion “all Men are created equal,” is equally beloved by the American people.

Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of American independence with a spontaneous celebration, which is described in a letter by John Adams to Abigail Adams. However, observing Independence Day only became commonplace after the War of 1812.

This year we are celebrating our independence by having a special meal at the center. Wednesday, July 2, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. join us for lunch at the senior center. We are making pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, potato salad and three bean casserole all for $6.50. You will be entertained by patriotic music. Bring a friend and wear your red, white and blue.

Don’t forget our coffee shop where every day you can have homemade soup for $1 and a sandwich for 50 cents. Tuesday, July 1, we will be having Scalloped Potatoes and Ham in the coffee shop starting at 11:30 for $2. You are always welcome at the center.
