Habitat for Humanity looking for volunteers

Habitat for Humanity-Freeborn/Mower is looking for help from the community for its first home construction of the year.
“We’ve had about 10 volunteers so far, but we need a lot more,” said Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Brigitte Campbell.
From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, volunteers are welcomed to help with the construction of a new house for Jacob and Rebecca Achuoth and their five children, located at 812 12th Ave. SE in Austin. The construction of the home began July 9, and Habitat for Humanity leaders hope to have it completed by the end of the year.
The house will be 26 by 44 square feet, with four bedrooms.
“They’re humble little homes, but very energy efficient,” Campbell said.
Habitat selects a family to build a home for based on need, willingness to partner and income. The Achuoth’s current housing is considered substandard, had significant overcrowding, the family was threatened with eviction, and had plumbing problems, which made them a good candidate for the new home.
Thrivent Financial — along with other cash donations made by local residents, businesses, and churches — is funding the project. This will be Habitat’s 33rd home.
Group building days can be scheduled upon request by contacting the Habitat for Humanity office at their website www.habitatfreebornmower.org or calling Brigitte Campbell, Executive Director at 507-433-1349.
“Folks are welcome to come out and build with us,” Campbell said. “We always need more volunteers.”
