Johnson: Busy time ahead at the Hormel Home
Published 3:52 pm Saturday, July 5, 2014
I had trouble coming up with a topic for this column because there are many things on my mind regarding the HHH right now.
First, I have to recognize William Henry Hormel’s birthday, (George Hormel’s brother). He was born on July 4, 1862. W.H. Hormel made his home in Austin from 1894-1899 while he served as pastor of the local Presbyterian Church. He resided at 308 S. Greenwich St. (now Second Street Southwest) from where he most likely would have been able to see the fabulous fireworks display over Bandshell Park on Independence Day. My son was born on Halloween so I know how exciting those holiday birthdays can be!
I also want to highlight the free Peace Garden Tour that will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 8. The Hormel Historic Home garden is filled with beautiful flowers, many that were donated by community members. It also pays tribute to various people who consider the Home a special place. There are engraved landscaping bricks lining the flower beds that recognize many families. A “tree” recognizing those who have contributed to the garden’s preservation adorns the east side of the home. A statue stands in memory of Lu Stolzenberg who volunteered countless hours at the facility in her day. And a round trellis was placed in honor of Esther Plehal. The most recent addition to the garden is an artistic white trellis placed in remembrance of Sheri Day and her contribution to the HHH. A beautiful purple President Clematis is making its way up this memorial piece.
Several gardeners have had a hand in maintaining the garden and we are grateful to them. Vicki Trimble of the Hardy Geranium currently takes care of the space and will guide a group through the garden on July 8.
This is also the season for our autism focus to come to life. All Access Community Explorations started this week. This program, designed especially for youth diagnosed on the autism spectrum, is for those in sixth through 12th grades. The title fits the purpose of the program as the camp director and her staff are dedicated to preparing the students to be effective and contributing members of their communities. They visit various locations and use social and life skills that are necessary to helping them thrive as they become young adults.
I am also headed to the Minnesota Historical Society to examine the architectural drawings of Harry Wild Jones. He was hired by George Hormel to remodel the Historic Home in 1901. I can’t wait to tell you what I find. It is certainly a busy time.
