Virgil Kenneth Arett, 92, of Spring Valley, Minn., passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014.
He was born March 22, 1922, in Freeborn County near Moscow, Minn., to Benjamin and Ida Mae (Hubbard) Arett. He married Lillian E. Kingsley on June 8, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
He drove heavy construction equipment in Austin, Minn., until he was drafted into the army in 1944 where he served in the Philippines until 1946. After his discharge he returned to the area and continued working as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement from Freeman Construction 30 years ago.
Virgil and Lillian moved to the Spring Valley area in 1948. He was proud of all the building sites, roads, bridges, and waterways that he built in Fillmore County for Freeman Construction. In his retirement he became an incredible baker of pies, cookies and bread.
Virgil is survived by his children Kyle (Debbie) Arett of McDonough, Ga., Kent (Erika) Arett of Ludlow, Ky., and Vicky (Jim) O’Connell of Spring Valley, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary King of San Leandro, Calif., and Janet Roberts of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Laura Zidlicky of Postville, Iowa, Betty Arett of Austin, Minn., Ginny Palmer of Pleasanton, Calif., and Margo Arett of Blaine, Minn.; and his long term friend and care giver, Vicky Moore and her family of Spring Valley, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillian; daughter, Cynthia; parents, Benjamin and Ida Mae; sisters, Fern, Alice, Gladys, and Barbara; and brothers, Raymond, Pete, and Duane.
Funeral services for Virgil K. Arett will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Dennis Timmerman and the Rev. Laura Fladten officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
