What do a fundraiser, football and butterflies all have in common? This weekend! Check out all the fun events happening this weekend, there’s sure to be something for the whole family.
1. Children’s Miracle Network Fundraiser
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Accentra Credit Union, 400 Fourth Ave. NE
Participants can get a hotdog or Spam burger with a beverage for $2, and they can purchase a Schwan’s Ice Cream Bar for $1.
2. Monarch Tagging
1-3:30 p.m., Jay C. Hormel Nature Center Friday
Ages 10-12, $5, free for friends members, full scholarships available. Stop by the Visitor Center to register. In conjunction with research being done through the Monarch Watch organization, students in this class will learn to catch, tag, record, and release monarchs to make an amazing nearly 2,000-mile journey to spend the winter in Mexico.
3. Austin Packer Football kicks off season
7 p.m. on Friday, Wescott Field
Austin Packer Football will host Rochester Mayo for the first game of the season. The first game was chosen to be the night to celebrate the seniors, who will be leading the team through the season. Come for game time at 7 p.m.; pre-game introductions will be at 6:30 p.m., and tailgate will be at 5:15 p.m. Other contests include: Football: Lyle-Pacelli at Mabel-Canton, 7 p.m.; Wabasha-Kellogg at Southland, 7 p.m.; Mankato Loyola at Blooming Prairie, 7 p.m.; Grand Meadow at LeRoy-Ostrander, 7 p.m.; Kingsland at Hayfield, 7 p.m. Cross country: Austin at Rosemont, 10:50 a.m. College soccer: Riverland at St. Mary’s JV, 4 p.m.
4. More sports Saturday
The high school and college sports scene doesn’t stop after Friday. At 10 a.m. on Saturday the Austin girls soccer team will host Mankato Loyola, followed by the boys team who will host Pine Island. Area volleyball teams, including Austin, Southland, Blooming Prairie, Grand Meadow will be at the Rochester Invite, starting at 8 a.m. The Riverland volleyball team will be on the road at Anoka-Ramsey.
