The Austin boys soccer team gave Owatonna all it could handle, but it just didn’t get the bounces as it lost 2-1 on the road Thursday.
The Huskies (10-2-3 overall, 7-2-2 Big Nine) scored the game-winning goal on a direct free kick off of Austin’s back-up keeper Chris Kirchgatter, a sophomore, with 15 minutes left in the game.
Austin keeper Gach Gach was knocked out of the game when an Owatonna player slid into his leg with his cleats up.
“On one hand you can say he slipped, but there was definitely intent there,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said.
The Packers (5-8-2 overall, 3-6-2 Big Nine) fired 20 shots in the loss, but Levi Vierkandt had Austin’s lone goal.
“We had lots of shots and lots of opportunities. We had a number of balls hit the post and we had one that bounced down and it almost crossed the line,” Levisen said. “Our guys played just great. We moved the ball around. We created opportunities. On any other day, we would’ve come out with a win instead of a loss.”
Austin finishes the season in eighth place out of 12 Big Nine teams. Mankato West won the conference title.
Austin will close out its regular season when it hosts Kasson-Mantorville Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Packers will begin the Section 1A tournament in Austin Tuesday at 7 p.m.
