The Austin volleyball team closed out its home schedule with a solid game, but the match certainly didn’t go its way as it was swept by Rochester Century in Packer Gym Thursday.

The Panthers (11-4 overall, 5-3 Big Nine) won the match by scores of 25-14, 25-8, 25-22.

Austin (3-17 overall, 0-8 Big Nine) was within 16-11 early in the first game, but Century pulled away and the Packers were never in the second game.

“Everything that you’re not supposed to do, we basically did,” Austin senior Alex Hansen said. “We didn’t communicate on the court and that was our biggest issue.”

The Packers rebounded and played well as they led 21-13 after Trista Akkerman had back-to-back kills. Century bounced back by scoring 12 of the next 13 points.

Hansen, who had seven kills and 10 digs, said it was hard to play the final home volleyball match of her career.

“It was really tough,” she said. “In the first couple of games were lagging behind. In the third game we realized we can put this together if we communicate and work together.”

Austin, which has lost 10 straight matches, will close the regular season out with three straight road matches.

“We just need to play consistently,” Austin head coach Cindy Owen said. “We fought back in that third game, but we have not found a consistent pattern all season. We’re on a roller coaster ride, we play well when we’re up and when we’re down we struggle.”

Austin stats: Jaidyn Bastian, 7 points serving; Shayley Vesel, 4 points serving, 7 set assists, 4 kills, 1 ace; Trista Akkerman, 7 kills; Alex Hansen, 7 kills, 10 digs; Marissa Hart, 9 set assists; Kelsey Sederquest, 19 digs; Amber Hansen, 1 ace
