Best Bets: Theater events kick off weekend

Get ready for a variety of choices this weekend. With some onstage performances, a 5K and yummy pancakes, there’s sure to be fun during the changing of seasons.

1. Tim O’Brien’s ‘The Things They Carried’

7:30-10 p.m. on Thursday, Frank W. Bridges Theatre Riverland Community College Austin Campus

A History Theatre production, “The Things They Carried” is the powerful telling of Austin-native Tim O’Brien’s journey from his innocent years in Minnesota to the jungles of Vietnam as a young American soldier, a story of loss and redemption. The play adaptation of O’Brien’s book contains descriptions of violence and is recommended for ages 16 and up. 2. Matchbox presents “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”

7 to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Historic Paramount Theatre

“‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Jennifer Kirkeby is a delightful musical that takes a creative approach about how the holiday classic by Clement C. Moore might have been written and fanciful creatures who just might have provided some inspiration. It is sure to get everyone in the mood for the Christmas season. Cost is $7.

3. Harvest 5K Walk/Run

9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Todd Pavilion Park

The 5k will harvest healthy food for the county’s food shelves. The entry fee is $20 and a healthy food donation. Bring donations on the day of walk/run. Proceeds beyond the cost of the 5k will go directly to county food shelves and food donations from the day of the race will go to the Austin Salvation Army. Registered participants will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and water bottle. Registration can still be made from 7:30-8:30 a.m. on the day of the event.

4. One Stop Holiday Shopping

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sumner Elementary School

There will be lunch for everyone, with a $5 pulled pork meal and a $3 hot dog meal. The event is sponsored by Sumner Parents United 4 Kids, and all the proceeds will be used to purchase playground equipment.

5. Try Hockey for Free

10:15 to 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, Riverside Arena

Take part in National Try Hockey for Free Day, sponsored by USA Hockey. Hockey jerseys and equipment will be provided by Austin Youth Hockey and Riverside Arena for youth ages 4 to 9. Goodie bags and skate certificates will be provided by USA Hockey, and free slushies and popcorn from Austin Youth Hockey. For more information, call 507-433-1881.

6. Batter Up, Baseball ‘n’ Pancake Benefit Breakfast

8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, Austin Eagles Club

Enjoy a great breakfast, meet baseball celebrities and participate in a silent auction to support USA baseball and local all-American 12U team member Teyghan Hovland. Cost is $7.
