ADAMS —The Southland boys basketball team certainly didn’t lack effort in its season opener, but it couldn’t keep up with Chatfield in a 79-60 loss in Adams Friday.

The Rebels (0-1 overall, 0-1 Three Rivers) trailed 42-36 with a minute left in the first half and the Gophers (1-0 overall, 1-0 Three Rivers) scored the next 14 points to pull away.

“The one thing with this group as you can never question their effort,” Southland head coach Matt Webber said. “We battled, we just got in a home and got in some foul trouble. That kind of hurt us.”

Josh Anderson had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Rebels and Chris Webber added 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Southland is playing with a young team and coach Webber is expecting the squad to take some time to gel.

“We’re going to have to grow as the season goes along this year. We’ll have to find ourselves in the first eight or ten games and see where we are,” he said. “We’re going off not much varsity experience. I’m going to have to learn to relax a little as we go.”
