He attended the University of Minnesota for one year before enrolling in the college of pharmacy at North Dakota State University. Lester worked summers at Weber & Judd and other pharmacies to complete his one year of practical experience needed for his pharmacy license. In 1954, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from North Dakota State University. He worked for Weber & Judd Pharmacy and Berg Drug in Stewartville, and East Side Drug in Austin. Lester then began working for the pharmacy in Pine Island, purchasing the store in 1965. He was united in marriage to Anita Leone Weis on Aug. 18, 1969, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In 1971, he sold his Pine Island pharmacy, and he and Anita moved to Las Vegas. Lester continued to work in various pharmacy positions in Arizona and Nevada. In 1993, he and Anita returned to Austin. He enjoyed bowling, and loved playing first base in youth baseball. Lester was a former member of the Pine Island Lions Club, and during his time in Las Vegas he was active in the Knights of Columbus.
