Joyce M. Tiegen, 87, of Austin, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, at her home.

Joyce Margaret Werner was born Nov. 21, 1927, in Wells, Minnesota, to Fredrick and Mildred (Noble) Werner. She attended grade school and high school in Wells, graduating in 1945. Joyce attended Hamline University in St. Paul, Miss Woods Teacher’s Academy, and later the University of Colorado. In June 1955, Joyce married Irwin B. Tiegen Jr. The couple resided in Austin and had two children, Mary and Eric. Joyce taught for many years as a kindergarten teacher, and later at First Congregational pre-school in Austin. For many years, Joyce volunteered her time at St. Olaf Hospital. Irwin passed away in 1991 and Eric in 1977.

Survivors include her daughter Mary Tiegen of Plymouth, Minnesota; her sister Jane Simon and her husband David Nagel of Blue Earth, Minnesota; her niece Jody (Cody) Blackburn of Winnebago, Minnesota; her nephew Jay (Amy) Simon and their children Kylee and Cole, all of Orchard, Colorado; her dog ‘Ollie’; and her many great neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Fredrick and Mildred Werner; her husband Irwin Tiegen Jr.; her son Eric Tiegen; her brother-in-law Dennis Simon; her in-laws Irwin and Anna Tiegen Sr.; and family friend Bertha Wold.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Paul Lutter officiating. A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and will continue on Tuesday for one hour prior to services, at church. Private interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to Helping Paws (www.helpingpaws.org) or donor’s choice. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.
