An HD remake of a classic game hit the market last week.
I’m not sure how many young gamers have played the original “Resident Evil.” I know I didn’t play it until years after it was first released. Yet Capcom’s famous franchise and its creator, Shinji Mikami, are responsible for the survival horror genre which still remains popular to this day.
“Resident Evil” — or “Biohazard” as it’s known in Japan — was released in 1996. Mikami took cues from previous spooky games like Capcom’s “Sweet Home” and the “Alone in the Dark” series to create a twist on the action genre — a game where players must conserve ammo, items and even saves to make it through a demonic mansion.
The Playstation game, with its outlandish plot, tense frights and tough gameplay, was a hit. The original “Resident Evil” sold more than 5 million copies and the director’s cut, released a year later and before “Resident Evil 2,” sold several million more copies after that.
Mikami would later oversee “Resident Evil 3” and “Dino Crisis” before he moved to a higher position within Capcom. He still dabbled in the creative process and was largely responsible for many innovations with “Resident Evil 4,” one of the most influential and highly-rated games in the 2000s.
Mikami left Capcom about eight years ago and went on to create some interesting games, including cult beat-’em-up “Godhand” and, most recently, “The Evil Within,” another well-received survival horror game.
For its part, Capcom has done well with the “Resident Evil” franchise, which remains its highest-selling series of games. Though the company recently underwent some financial troubles, the “Resident Evil” franchise is set to make a big splash on the latest consoles when “Resident Evil: Revelations 2” is released this spring.
For now, pick up a copy of the HD remake of “Resident Evil” and enjoy the game that started the scares.
