Presentation looks at Dakota War Trials

Published 4:56 pm Saturday, January 10, 2015

At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the Mower County Historical Society will be doing a presentation at the Senior Center, “The Dakota War Trials.”

This presentation focuses specifically on the military commission trials that occurred immediately after the war, which resulted in 303 Dakota Native Americans being sentenced to death. Ultimately 38 were hanged at Mankato in the largest mass execution in US history.

The Dakota War Trials have been extremely controversial ever since 1862, and this presentation will discuss some of those controversies: Were the trials legal? Did the army even have the authority to put the Indians on trial? And what about the role of Henry Sibley, who was the man who ordered the trials (he was also Minnesota’s first governor. Some historians believe Sibley actually broke the law by his handling of the military commission trials.
