The Austin Fire Department is about to get a new roof over its head.

The Austin City Council approved funds to replace the roof of the Austin Fire Station at its regularly scheduled city council meeting Monday night.

The roof replacement will cost about $180,000, which will come from Public Employee Retirement Association funds set aside specifically for capital projects, which means it won’t affect the city’s 2015 tax levy.

Fire Chief Jim McCoy previously recommended they enter into an agreement with Paul Johnson Architects Inc. for the project’s design.

The Austin City Council scheduled $200,000 in Fire PERA funding in the 2015 budget to also help repair deteriorating walls at the city fire station. Several walls inside the fire station are showing damage from leaking water. The fire station, located at 122 First Ave. NE, was built in the early 1980s. This is the first time the city has had to repair the roof since the station was built.
