Prevalence: In 2012, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3 percent of the population, had diabetes. In 2010 the figures were 25.8 million and 8.3 percent.

Undiagnosed: Of the 29.1 million, 21.0 million were diagnosed, and 8.1 million were undiagnosed. In 2010 the figures were 18.8 million and 7.0 million.

Prevalence in seniors: The percentage of Americans age 65 and older remains high, at 25.9 percent, or 11.8 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed).

When you hear the word diabetes, it seems to instantly trigger a response. Our society is plagued with misconceptions about diabetes based on the belief that diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar. Come in and find out more information.

The YMCA of Austin started a new program to help you prevent diabetes. Jill from the Y will be at the senior center to introduce you to this program and answer your questions.

She will also discuss:

•Evidence based program to help those at high risk of developing diabetes

•16 weekly sessions followed by 8 monthly sessions

•Small groups led by a trained lifestyle coach

•Less than $36/month; financial aid available; Y membership not required.

We look forward to seeing you at our many programs at the senior center.

Don’t forget our coffee shop where every day you can have homemade soup for $1 and a sandwich for 50 cents. Tuesday we are serving tator tot hotdish for only $2.
