The Austin baseball team overcame an early deficit, but it wasn’t able to close it out in a 9-5 loss to Red Wing (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) in Dick Seltz Field Saturday.
The Packers (0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) trailed 6-0 after two innings, but they came back get within 6-5. Jaston Stoulil had an RBI single and Ryan McCormack had a sacrifice bunt for an RBI to get the Packers within a run in the fifth. That’s when the Wingers put Ty Buck on the mound and Austin wasn’t able to get a rally going against the Wingers’ ace.
Buck pitched three innings and he allowed just one hit with six strikeouts. The Wingers padded their lead to 8-5 when Zach Collins hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the sixth.
“We showed that we were going to fight back no matter who was on the mound. We had it right there and we can definitely take action for it,” Austin head coach Chris Gogolewski said. “The response is good. They didn’t hang their heads and they believed in themselves. When you string a couple of hits together good things are going to happen.”
The Wingers came out swinging in the first two innings as they seven hits in the first two frames, but Austin pitcher Nik Gasner settled down and allowed just three hits and zero runs over the next three innings.
“Nik didn’t have his best stuff, but he battled on both sides of the plate and Dylan [Gasner] did a good job of calling the game,” Gogolewski said.
