The main cause of diabetes is due to the shortage of insulin or insulin resistance. Glucose is the ultimate source of energy for all metabolic processes. Insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas plays a vital role in regulating the movement of glucose and levels of glucose or blood sugar.

A pancreas transplant is an operation to place a pancreas into someone whose own pancreas does not function, usually because of type 1, or insulin-dependent, diabetes.

Gary has been a type 1 diabetic all his life. A few years ago he was an organ recipient of a pancreas. On Friday Gary will be at the senior center to talk about his experience. He has spoken to many schools, senior groups, organizations and driver ed classes over the past four years.

Come and hear Gary’s extraordinary story of what it means to be a donor and what it means to be a recipient.

We look forward to seeing you at our many programs at the senior center.

Don’t forget our coffee shop where every day you can have homemade soup for $1 and a sandwich for 50 cents.
