Spring Used Book Sale still accepting donations

Just because summer is almost here doesn’t mean the reading is over.
The Spring Used Book Sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1 and 2 at the Austin Public Library. Saturday will also feature a $5 bag sale from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
“What’s so nice about the Spring Used Book Sale is that it’s a joint sale with AAUW, American Association of University Women, and the Friends of the Library,” said Dorothy Krob, the Friends of the Library’s PR chair. “So what we do is divide the proceeds in half — half go to scholarships at Riverland Community College, and the other half goes for projects and programs at the Austin Public Library.”
The sale sells donated books collected from area residents.
Krob said the event is still looking for donations and will accept them through April 28. People can leave donations at the library’s front desk or on the tables near the big meeting room doors.
“We’re looking for gently used materials and we really appreciate the people bringing them in,” Krob said.
Donations can include used books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, audio books, and music for children and adults. The sale will not accept magazines, textbooks, encyclopedias, or materials stored in a damp or smoky area.
Krob said the sale usually handles thousands of books and has raised an average of $4,000 and $6,000 per sale. Krob also thanked the volunteers who have helped during the sale.
“We’ve had wonderful volunteers too, to help set up and to work at the book sale, and we’ve really appreciated those people,” she said.
Krob said they are still looking for volunteers, and anyone interested should contact Sue Grove, president of the Friends of the Library, at 433-5464 to help with the setup or during the sale days.
