Barbara A. Nerad, 90, of Austin, died Sunday, May 3, 2015, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.
Barbara was born in Hedrick, Iowa, on March 12, 1925, to Edward and Cortney (Smith) Webb. She attended and graduated high school in Iowa. Barbara married John Varenhorst in 1942 and to this union, two children were born: Susan and Reid. Barbara and John later divorced.
Barbara married Donald L. Nerad on Feb. 9, 1963, and to this union, a son was born: Gene. Donald died in 1998.
Barbara was an entrepreneur in her time. She owned, operated or managed several businesses over the years. She owned the Steer Truck Stop in Albert Lea for eight years. Barbara then moved to Austin and managed the Key Apartments. While in Austin, she also owned and operated Belle Beauty Salon and Limousine Service for 10 years. After her retirement, she lived in Rochester, Owatonna and then back to Austin.
Barbara found Christ during the middle ages of her life. During that time in her life, she became more a more loving and giving person. She loved flowers, animals — especially cats — and helping people in need.
Barbara is survived by her children: Susan Varenhorst of South St. Paul, and Reid Varenhorst of Correctionville, Iowa; grandchildren: Alex, Kelly, Ray Jr. and Dylan; many nieces and nephews; special friends: Loni Baldner and Doris Smith.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald Nerad; son, Gene Nerad; siblings: Dorothy and Marjorie.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at International Word Fellowship, 210 4th Street NE in Austin, with Pastor Ray Tuck officiating. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be private. Memorials in Barbara’s name can be made to the Mower County Humane Society or International Word Fellowship.
