Best Bets: A weekend to honor veterans

A three-day weekend is a good way to relieve stress and take time to visit family and friends. But don’t forget to celebrate Memorial Day and recognize the men and women who’ve served our country.

1. Open Studio

10 a.m.-12 p.m. Friday, Austin ArtWorks Center, 300 Main Street North

Head down to the Clay Cavern this weekend. The ArtWorks Center has clay available and participants can bring other supplies such as paint, paper and canvas for their project. To use one of the throwing wheels, participants will need to attend an orientation session with John Sullivan. The studio is free for AACA members and $5 for non-members. 2. Chateau Raceway: USMTS/Guttormson Memorial

6:30 p.m. Friday, Chateau Raceway, 54219 266 St., Lansing

3. Public Auction

10 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, Packer Arena, 601 Sevent St. NE, Austin

The city of Austin and Austin Police Department will hold a public auction featuring vehicles, bikes and more through www.auctionsgo.com. For more information, call 507-437-9407.

4. Sola Fide Viewing

9-10 p.m. Saturday, Sola Fide Observatory

5. Veterans Memorial program

7:45 a.m. Monday, Mower County Veterans Memorial

The annual Memorial Day program will recognize veterans for their sacrifice and service.

6. Memorial Day Parade

8:45 a.m. Saturday, Fourth Avenue Northeast, South on Main Street and East on Second Avenue Northeast

Get together with friends, family and neighbors to honor veterans through the Memorial Day Parade. Parade lineup is at 8:30 a.m.

7. Oakwood Cemetery service

9:30 a.m. Monday, Oakwood Cemetery, 1800 Fourth St. NW, Austin

The annual service begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. and will feature several tributes from area veterans groups. The Calvary and Grandview cemetery services will follow at 11 a.m., Lansing and Enterprise cemetery services are at 11:30 a.m., and Midway/Oakland will be at noon.

8. Memorial Day Dinner

11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, 58251 105th St., Lyle, MN

There will be pulled barbecue sandwiches with potato salad, barbecue beans, relish trays and pies. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 5 to 12 and is free for children under 5. Tickets are available at the door and take-out is available.
