Best Bets: A weekend with things for all moods

This weekend is filled with great things to do and many things to learn about. Whether you’re in a serious mood, ready to listen to some hoppin’ music or getting pumped to race at the annual Darren Dash, there’s something for everyone this weekend.
1. Human Rights Commission film showing
6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jay C. Hormel Nature Center
The Human Rights Commission of Austin is committed to stopping the practice of human trafficking in southern Minnesota. This event will discuss options to help the organization. The film contains candid, adult content and is not recommended for children.
2. Summer Kick Off Concert
5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Downtown Austin
All ages are invited to hear the music of Packer Jazz, Jazz One, Big Ben and the Brians, and Ventura Highway. Take time to shop, eat and drink downtown on Main Street between Second and Fourth Avenues, which will be blocked to traffic. The Austin Jaycees will host the beer garden, and there will be free kids’ activities. The event is sponsored by the Hormel Historic Home and is part of Vision 2020’s Destination Downtown efforts.
3. Spring Plant Sale
9 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, Mower Senior Center, 400 Third Ave. NE
The sale for annual and perennial plants for homes, yards and gardens is set for Saturday. Each spring members of the Mower County Horticultural Society share their tried and true plants from their gardens. Also see the “Dirt Cheap Boutique.”
4. Kids Duathlon
10 a.m. Saturday, Lafayette Park, 901 N. Main St., Austin
This event is in conjunction with the free Spring Kids Fest. This is a non-competitive event for kids to have fun and get moving. Training wheels are allowed, bike helmets are required, and parents may also complete the duathlon with their child. Register at the YMCA of Austin or www.ymca-austin.org. The event is $5 per child, and all participants will receive a participation ribbon and snack at the end of the event.
5. Free Baseball Skills Camp
11 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, Marcusen Park, 901 N. Main St.
Join the Austin Greyhounds for their free baseball skills camp. This event is a part of the free Spring Kids Fest taking place at Lafayette Park and is open to the community for grades kindergarten through fifth. The camp will include autographs with the players, skills stations and baseball fundamentals. Bring a baseball glove along. Pre-Registration is required at the YMCA of Austin or www.ymca-austin.org.
6. Fourth annual Darren Dash
6:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Sunday, Veteran’s Pavilion, Band Shell Park, 104 Ninth Place SW
This fourth annual event honoring Austin native and running enthusiast Darren Lewis starts and ends at the Veteran’s Pavilion. Register at www.darrendash.org through Friday and in person the day before and morning of the race. Packet pick up/registration will be held at Lewis Physical Therapy/Excel Fitness located at 103 Third Ave. NW, Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and the morning of the race at 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. The event will be chip-timed. Water stops and post race refreshments will be provided for all participants. A kiddie run will take place at 11 a.m. immediately followed by an awards ceremony. Proceeds from this event will go to a scholarship fun for Austin Cross Country runners and for programs committed to improving mental and physical health in the community. 7. Riverland Community College Jubilee Jam
2-8 p.m. Sunday, Riverland Community College Baseball Field
This event is free and for the whole family; with live music, a beer garden and food, participants will celebrate Riverland’s 75 years of educational service. Bring a chair for the line-up of bands, including Six Mile Grove, The D’seivers, Josh & Karen Larson, and Whalen and the Willows. For more information, call 507-433-0600.
8. ‘The Drop Box’ film showing
6-9 p.m. Sunday, Faith Church, 1800 12th St. SW
Come to “The Drop Box” viewing at Faith Church at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Donations will go to benefit the Ravenhorst family who will move to Haiti to work with Back2Back Ministries. Snacks will be available. The church is located at 1800 12th St. SW in Austin.
