Crowd gets a history of Austin medicine

A small but enthusiastic crowd attended our recent History Happy Hour event.
Chuck Keller shared the history of the Austin Medical Clinic dating back to its start in the late 1800s. He recounted the major milestones in its development and the key personnel who made it a success. Following this historical perspective, Steve Waldhoff, Chief Administrative Officer of Mayo Clinic Health System Austin, discussed how the partnership developed between AMC and the Mayo organization. He answered questions regarding the future of health care and gave a great overview of the mission and philosophy of one of Minnesota’s most well-known assets.
The Friends of the Library, the Mower County Historical Society, and the Hormel Historic Home will again host History Happy Hour on June 8, and antique lovers won’t want to miss it. Mark F. Moran will evaluate that treasure you have always wondered about. Mr. Moran is the author or co-author of more than 25 books on antiques and collectibles, including three editions of the 800-page annual “Warman’s Antiques & Collectibles.” He has also served as editor of several antique publications. His experience spans more than 30 years, and he is excited to give you some information about your beloved item.
There are some exceptions to what Mark will evaluate including all weapons (though folding knives with advertising are accepted), Nazi memorabilia, coins and paper money, fine jewelry, including precious gems, and Beanie Babies. Please contact him beforehand if you have a questionable item.
For members of the Friends of the Library, the Mower County Historical Society or the HHH, there will be no charge for Mark’s services. The cost is $5 for non-members. Participants are allowed to show one item and space is limited to 25 items. Pre-registration is required by calling the HHH at 507-433-4243. You will be placed on the list on a first come, first serve basis.
The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with social time including light snacks and a cash bar. The evaluations will begin at 6 p.m.
Mr. Moran is also available for home visits. If you have a house full of treasures or items too large to transport, Mark will come to your home while he is in town. The cost for a home visit is $75 per hour. Appointments for in home visits must be made directly with Mark. He can be reached at 715-281-5060 or moranm1953@gmail.com.
