Get a jazzy kick-off to summer

My folks used to keep date night religiously at a place called the Leisure Bar. My mom tells me it was on the Plaza, whatever that means.
I had no idea where they were going at the time, only that Mom spent ages getting ready every Thursday evening. I watched her, wishing she wouldn’t go, as she applied makeup and yelled to my father the answers to questions he hadn’t asked. “Your shoes are in the laundry room!” for example.
I’d later wake with relief to hear them arriving home, laughing and humming. It was a jazz tune, without fail. Thursdays were for live jazz at the Leisure Bar, and my parents were among a group of Austinites who kept their company there. The music, it’s been said, was unmissable.
While the Leisure is gone, jazz has never quite disappeared from Austin. It has crescendoed in certain swells, hopping from place to place and collecting ears along the way. And it will soon reach the ArtWorks Center. A trio of four is set to make music at the Bank, and they’re bringing a little piece of the Leisure along with them.
The Peter Jacobs Jazz Trio, along with that Thursday night piece of history — Brian Koser —kicks off the summer at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12.
The trio itself boasts an impressive repertoire and Koser, who is known for his blistering solos and mastery of improvisation, is sure to bring an unforgettable accompaniment to the group for this one-night-only performance at the ArtWorks Center.
It might not be on a Thursday, but you can still make it a date. Grab your tickets for $5 at the door.
