Get a start on your budding art career

One of our mantras around the ArtWorks Center is that even [insert great artist here] had to start somewhere. And I’m telling you, you can start here as early as Thursday.
Starry Nights in Austin, which hits the Center at 5:30 p.m. on May 21, is a Canvas and Chardonnay-style master class that, much like our Uncork and Create classes, will include step-by-step instruction.
And when I say no experience is necessary to join in, I mean it — plenty of folks have walked into class without having picked up a paintbrush since their elementary days and, having watched dozens of these classes myself, I have yet to see a bad result.
Unlike our Uncork and Create classes, though, Joan Finnegan, or “Joni” as we know her, will be graciously donating her time and expertise to this special event, which has been organized to benefit the AACA and its programs.
Work by Finnegan, who was the featured visual artist at last year’s ArtWorks Festival, will surround attendees on Thursday— our new gallery, featuring Joni as well as Lora Lee Bauer, opened on May 15 and will run through mid-June. Even if you didn’t catch the opening, make a point to stop by the center and check out the show; it’s free and open to the public during regular business hours.
In addition to creating your own work of art, you’ll have time to catch up with neighbors. And Hy Vee, along with the ever-delicious Costas’ Chocolates, will be providing snacks and beverages, which means your inner VanGogh won’t go hungry (or thirsty). And if that weren’t enough, you’ll also be helping the arts flourish in our hometown — the suggested donation of $200 per person will keep our doors open and our events rolling.
