Lyla Sargent, 89, passed away on May 21, 2015, at her home at Susie’s Place in Hayfield, Minnesota.
Lyla was born on July 22, 1925, the daughter of Lyle and Amiee (Cobban) Worden in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She attended Robinsdale High School graduating in 1943. Following high school she attended the University of Minnesota graduating in home economics. On June 29, 1946, Lyla was united in marriage to Dale Edward Sargent in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. They raised three children. In 1957, Lyla and Dale moved to Hayfield, where they owned and published the Hayfield Herald until 1985, when they retired. After retirement, Lyla Mary worked for the city of Hayfield for a number of years. She enjoyed music, reading, watching birds, flowers and singing in the church choir, was a member of circle, study club, and music club. Lyla Mary loved spending time with family and friends. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hayfield.
Lyla is survived by her children: James Sargent, Duluth, Minnesota, Jill Matthiesen, Hayfield, Minnesota, and Patricia (Kelly) Njos, Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; four granddaughters: Brooke (Zack) Downey, Kate (Marty) Hinz, Emma Sargent, and Nicole (Mike) Schneider; and three great-grandsons: Reilly and Rauhan Downey, and Tucker Schneider.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale; grandson, James Matthiesen; one brother, Russell; and two sisters: Roberta and Maurine.
The funeral service for Lyla Mary Sargent will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church, 109 Main Street East in Hayfield with the Rev. Charlie Talcott officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, 501 2nd Street NW in Hayfield and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
