Hulne: Vikings have had a super Spring

It’s been a crazy Spring for Hayfield High School athletes.

The softball team will play in its first state tournament since 1994, the baseball team won its first subsection title since 1999 and it will pursue its first ever trip to the state tournament Tuesday in Rochester, and the track and field and golf teams each advanced athletes to state.

Whatever is going on in Hayfield, the local athletes need to keep doing whatever they’ve been doing. Because they’ve been outstanding.

The Hayfield softball team is 20-4 overall and it has won 10 straight games and the Hayfield baseball team is 18-5 with six straight wins.

The unfortunate part about Spring sports is sometimes they got lost in the mix of the warmer weather and the 5 p.m. start times aren’t exactly fan friendly, but the town of Hayfield has rallied behind its baseball and softball teams.

“It’s been a great Spring,” Hayfield athletic director Chris Pack said. “Our town has supported them and it’s been really fun for the players to play in front of such a crowd. It’s been invigorating to our school.”

It’s rare to see a boys team and a girls team make it to state in the same season from the same high school and the baseball team can make a that happen with a win on Tuesday.

Hayfield senior Cody Carpentier will compete in the shot put and discus at the Class A state track and field meet this week and Hayfield golfers Brady Becker and Aaron Anderson will compete at the Class A state meet next week.

Needless to say, it’s good to be a Viking right now.

“It’s pretty rare to have two teams this close making it to state,” Pack said. “It’s awesome and it’s a lot of excitement for the whole town and the whole school.”

The craziest part about Hayfield’s successful Spring is that not many saw it coming. Even some of the athletes and coaches have been surprised with the success Hayfield has had on the baseball and softball diamonds this year.

The success didn’t come by accident either. The baseball team has put in plenty of time after practice to work on things and they’ve been motivated to improve since the season started and the Hayfield softball team is loaded with a talented group of freshmen that play hard every single time they’re on the field.

With so many athletes having success, Pack hopes Hayfield will have a strong sports year next year as well.

“There’s memories that are being made. It’s great that these kids get to experience this,” Pack said. “Hopefully it’s contagious to all of our sports to see this success. A lot of these athletes compete in other sports and hopefully we just run with it and it has a lasting effect. It’s special and not everyone gets to experience it.”

The Hayfield athletes better enjoy this ride and embrace it, because it’s not likely they’ll ever experience another Spring sports season like they did this year.
